Dogs nails will be clipped to just before the vein in the nail to prevent causing pain and bleeding. If the nails are black and the vein can't be seen the sharp tips will be trimmed off. Some dogs nails cant be trimmed as they are already worn down even though they may be sharp I will not risk cutting the vein and hurting the dog. Please check to see if your dog has back dewclaws - this is a nail that tends to curl and is often missed and forgotten about causing the nail to grow completely around and back into the pad of the dog, this nail can be found on the insides of the dogs back legs. Dogs that commonly have back dewclaws are Shih Tzus , Lhasa apso's , Maltese etc. If you are still unsure whether your dog has back dewclaws don't be afraid to ask when you are having your dog groomed.
